Saturday Dogs...and the owners they trained

This book misses the mark. To get a practical, step by step understanding of how dogs think, get "Saturday Dogs......and the owners they trained", by Susan Overfield. She is Montana's dog whisperer, and has been at it for 38 years, quietly changing dog after dog, owner after owner. Overfield gets dogs, and she gets people. And she does something traditional trainers don't---she guarantees her results. Overfield trains using a relationship based, dog centered method. She is Montana's own dog whisperer. She has trained rescue workers, breed groups, herding dogs, hunting dogs, dogs of every stripe, age, color, and personality. Her book is a delightful series of anecdotes which illustrate her method and how dogs think, using actual examples of dogs she has trained. The name of the book comes from her popular Saturday classes. Overfield trains around the country privately. She does fundraisers for rescues and shelters, and she also is acclaimed for speaking to large groups, including animal based trade groups. She writes like she talks, which is smart, witty, and unvarnished truth. Pick this book up here, or at her website: www.overfieldkennel.com. Watch the video. She is for real.

I suppose this is a fair dog training book for many dogs and many people but it did not work out too well for me or for my dog. It focuses on Clicker training and positive reinforcement. It does so by explaining the process and working through progressively more advanced examples. I think it might work well with puppies and even a great number of older dogs but I could not afford the costs in human or canine misery.

My dog is a "rescued" great Dane. He had and has some serious issues. He is a runt and weighs only about 140 lbs. but is still a real force of nature to be reckoned with. He is very loving with my family but, if I were to follow this book exactly, I would still be trying to coax my secretary's remains from between his teeth as I tried to convince the dog that there are better ways of behaving. It would be like letting Charles Mansion try to continue his killing spree while explaining to him why his behavior is unacceptable. Sometimes force is needed. According to this book, it is never permissible.

In spite of that lament from personal experience, this book does explain the real benefits of positive reinforcement and how to implement the training techniques. It has little to say about how to handle a dog who has learned to associate the "clicker" with a command to eat everyone in sight but I suppose that situation does not come up all that often.

Unfortunately, the book does NOT live up to its title. In fact, I bought three other books, and plan on putting this book in the 25 cent bin at my next yard sale. This trainer's idea of training is to use "Clicker Training" I don't know about you, but I don't carry a clicker around with me 24/7 and my dog's response to the clicker was to walk away from the irritating noise it makes. This book is not helpful in anyway. The book is no fun to read, it makes playing with your dog into work, the author has hard and fast RULES about dogs shouldn't be allowed on couches, beds etc... Too regimented, too harsh, and not for dog "lovers". My two pugs are part of the family, and our family enjoys cuddling with the pugs on the furniture and the beds. Better books I bought were, Dog Tricks for Dummies, Idiots Guide to dog training, the everything dog training book, etc. "The Only Dog Training Book You will ever need" Needs to be retitiled "A not Fun, unenjoyable way to annoy youself and your dog". Sorry, just don't waste your time. Dogs are to be loved and enjoyed. Not turned into soldiers that respond to a CLICK.

This unit worked really well on my mid sized dogs. But the unit stopped working after 3 DAYS!

Pos.
--------------------------
- Range is really good, I could zap the dog in the back yard from my room on the second floor. (great for when the dog is doing something wrong because he thinks no one is watching)

- I tried it on myself before the dogs. (Yes on my neck) it zings!

- two dog feature is really neat...just mark the remote so you don't zap the wrong dog (ooopps) :(

- comes with two dog collars

- works really well on my midsized dogs

- worked right through the coat

-------------------------
Neg.

- this unit stopped working after 3 days it is Very fragile according to other reviews
- it is slightly bulky but not that heavy
- works on batteries the kind that are in a camera
- There is no "Bark" feature. to zap if dog yaps.
- There is no 'distance' feature that will zap if dog is too far away. similar to a wireless fence.

These worked pretty well for the first couple weeks, but now one of them has stopped working completely and the other one is sporadic. Being rechargeable is a must because you need to recharge them every night (they do not have a shut off switch). I had the same collar that required batteries (a special 6 volt battery that cost over $4 each) and they would not last more than a few days before the battery was dead.

I just emailed the company about getting a replacement for the collars. And will update this review when I hear back from them.

This came in a really nice package almost like a gift box. It had extra accessories which I didn't expect and I am sure will be useful (two extra waterproof battery hole covers, two extra electrodes, 6 batteries). The collars are easy to adjust in size and seem to be comfortable. The remote is nice although it has a cheap feel, I have had no problems. The plastic shocker doo-dad is smaller than I expected and has rounded edges so is less bulky than others available and appears more streamlined. The settings are markedly different and while I am still getting the hang of training my younger dog with it, the older dog has pretty much ceased from his habitual barking habit.

The only reason I did not give 5 stars for this product is the batteries only last a few days to a week and it's not like we use it constantly or anything. Good thing these batteries can be purchased cheaply at the dollar store!
